Top 3 In The Trees - Why The Arborist Community Is So Extraordinary

People often ask me what I like about my job so much and my answer almost always involves writing about trees, tree workers, and arboriculture.

The Arborist Community is pretty special for many reasons. On the surface, the idea of doing tree work may seem simple, but the people out there that are doing it really are a special breed. This type of work requires incredibly diverse skills, amazing physical strength, and a passion for hard work.

In the past few years, Arborists have been getting more attention because of things like the growth of the Urban Forestry Movement, increasing talk about the need for more trees to help the environment, and the increasing diversity in terms of people doing tree work.

With that being said, now seems like as good of a time as ever to talk about some of the things that make Arboriculture and Arborists so incredible.

Top Ten Lessons You Can Learn From Arborists

1. The Fellowship Of The Friction Ring

Tree Work requires a lot of cooperation and trust. Arborists will tell you over and over again that the best thing about their job is the bond that they feel with the people they work with.

The camaraderie that comes along with situations where your life depends on working well with your coworkers, from the ground workers to the other people in the trees, is unmatched.

Since Arborist work also requires such specific skills, bravery, and knowledge, tree workers tend to have a very easy time finding common ground with each other. That is a special sort of kinship that you won’t find as easily in most other lines of work.

2. Planting A Better Future & Growing Change

It is becoming more and more clear that the world needs people who know how to plant and take care of trees.

It is pretty obvious to most people that trees help the environment by curbing carbon in the atmosphere, creating oxygen, and cooling the atmosphere.

It may be less obvious how important it is that we have experts around who know which types of trees are best in which neighborhoods, which plants are easiest to maintain with less need for water, and what these plants need in terms of care.

That is where arborists and PHC, or Plant Health Care Philosophy really comes into play when it comes to helping save the environment.

Another lesser-known topic of conversation is how much trees can improve urban neighborhoods. In the past two decades, arborists have been at the front of the Urban Forestry Movement, which aims to aid under-represented communities with the additions of trees and neighborhood gardens in urban neighborhoods.

Studies have consistently shown that trees and other plants decrease violence in neighborhoods, combat depression and feelings of hopelessness, and foster more communication between neighbors.

3. A Cure For Common Boredom

If you want to avoid boredom, tree work may be exactly the type of work that you should look into.

With a really wide variety of different types of work that Arborists do, they face different challenges every day. This keeps their brains working while they also take on the physically demanding work.

The sense of adventure that comes with climbing trees, sometimes hundreds of feet away from the ground also means that Arborist Work is great for adrenaline junkies and people who hate being cooped up inside.

On top of all of that, Arborists will tell you that they never stop learning about trees, new tree climbing gear, better ways to rig materials, and different ways to climb.
