What Is Spectra Fiber?

Spectra is a super fiber made by the Honeywell Corporation. This unique fiber was developed in the U.S. and is approximately five times stronger than steel. It is part of the polyethylene family of plastics and in addition to its strength, Spectra Fiber is known for its durability, resistance to abrasion, and its lightweight structure. Pelican Rope offers an exclusive Spectra Rope called the S-12, made with a 12 strand construction.

What Kind Of Rope Is Made With Spectra Fiber?

Our S-12 Rope is exclusive to Pelican Rope and is constructed with Spectra Fibers. This 12 strand braided Spectra Cord floats on water and resists corrosion. It is known for its resistance to chemicals, abrasion, and flex fatigue. The S-12 includes a special coating from Pelican Rope and offers extremely high stretch. This incredible rope is available in diameters ranging from ⅛” to 1 ¼” and a tensile strength 2,900 lbs to 165,000 lbs.

Some Features Of The S-12 Spectra Rope:

  • Low Creep
  • High flexibility
  • Easy To Splice
  • Floats On Water
  • Resists Corrosion
  • Abrasion Resistant
  • A Torque Free Rope
  • Available By The Mile
  • Strong But Lightweight Material
  • Maintains Strength In Freezing Temperatures

What Can The S-12 Spectra Line Be Used For?

With its incredible strength and flexibility coupled with the fact that it does not absorb water, the S-12 is excellent for a vast array of applications.

The S-12 Is Ideal For:

  • Utility Lines
  • Barge Lines
  • Winch Lines
  • Marine Lines
  • Rigging Lines
  • Mooring Lines
  • Steel Cable Replacements

What Is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene is a man-made plastic that is water-resistant and known for its waxy texture. It is an economical choice for at-home use and uses in swimming pools, fishing areas, golf courses, commercial spaces. Polyethylene is easily spliceable, lightweight, and highly buoyant.

While part of the Polyethylene family of fibers, Spectra is unique in its incredible strength. Spectra’s strength, which exceeds the strength of steel by about five times, is made possible by the fiber’s ultra-high molecular weight.

How Is Spectra Different From Dyneema?

Spectra is a fiber that is very similar to Dyneema in its molecular structure. Both fibers are incredibly strong and are highly resistant to fatigue. While Spectra has the highest resistance to fatigue, Dyneema is more resistant to wear in most heavy use areas.

Benefits Of Dyneema:

  • Higher Resistance To Wear In Heavy Use Areas

Benefits Of Spectra:

  • Higher Resistance To Fatigue Than Dyneema

Pelican Rope also offers The S-12’s close cousin, the D-12 which is a 12 Strand Rope made with Dyneema Fiber, rather than Spectra Fiber. This may be useful in some heavy use applications due to its higher elasticity and nominally higher strength. Whether you choose to use the S-12 or the D-12, you are getting a rope with incredible strength and resistance to fatigue.

How Does Spectra Fiber Compare To Steel?

Spectra Fiber is approximately five times stronger than steel. This means that Spectra Lines can be made extremely lightweight without compromising tensile strength. Spectra Fiber’s ultra-high molecular weight makes this super fiber ideal for many different applications.

How Is Spectra Fiber Made?

Spectra Fiber is made with an innovative process using a gel spinning technique. This forms long molecular chains and creates a fiber that is both incredibly strong and incredibly lightweight. This explains why Spectra materials are used in high-stakes applications by NASA and the military.

PELICAN ROPE  1/2" - Arborist-16™ Red Arborist Climbing Line

Great Rope For People Whose Life is Hanging In The Balance.

My son is a climber for a national company. He has used the rope for about a month and it has exceeded his expectations.
PELICAN ROPE  1/2" - Rig Master™ 3 Strand Composite Rope

Great Price

Tom H.
Quality as good as any other rope I've used. I have climbed trees for over 20 years. This rope works well for climbing, rigging, or pulling trees. I prefer a braided nylon for climbing (knot will allow faster descent then the twisted), however this rope surprised me how well it allowed descent. For the price, I will be ordering more..
